Richard P. Hiskes is the senior political theorist in the department and specializes in modern and contemporary political thought, especially as theory relates to contemporary political and environmental issues. He is the Editor of the Journal of Human Rights. His most recent work is in the areas of environmental ethics and human rights theory, and he is currently also the Director of the Human Rights Minor at UConn. His research in human rights has produced several published and forthcoming articles, including "Environmental Rights, Intergenerational Justice, and Reciprocity With the Future," Public Affairs Quarterly, July, 2005; "The Right to a Green Future," forthcoming in Human Rights Quarterly, November, 2005; and "Environmental Rights and Intergenerational Justice," forthcoming in Human Rights Review, January, 2006. He is the author of many other books and articles both in the history of political thought and in contemporary theory as it relates to policy issues, including Democracy, Risk, and Community: Technological Hazards and the Evolution of Liberalism, Oxford, 1998. His most recent book is The Human Right to a Green Future: Environmental Rights and Intergenerational Justice and is forthcoming from Cambridge University Press.
Hiskes also teaches a variety of graduate seminars including: "Liberalism and the Enlightenment;" "Theories of Justice;" "Theories of Rights;" "Community, Identity, and Justice;" "Politics and Vision: Wolin, Strauss, and Arendt;" and "The Nature of Political Inquiry."
